How We Process Ashwagandha Roots Before Making Powder

Ashwagandha is one of the most well-known traditional Indian herbs. Botanically known as Withania somnifera, its roots have been used for generations in traditional Ayurvedic practices.

But what happens to Ashwagandha roots after they come from the farm?

At Husband Wife Farm, we believe that good herbal powder starts with careful processing. Before our Ashwagandha roots are converted into powder, they go through a systematic process of cleaning, washing, drying and grinding.

Step 1: Selecting and Cleaning the Roots

The process begins with the selection of suitable Ashwagandha roots.

Since the roots grow underground, they can naturally carry soil and other field material. The roots are therefore carefully cleaned before moving to the washing stage.

Our aim is to remove unwanted foreign material while handling the roots carefully.

Step 2: Thorough Washing in Washing Tanks

After initial cleaning, the Ashwagandha roots are thoroughly washed in dedicated washing tanks.

This is an important stage of our processing because root herbs can carry soil and dust from the field.

We focus on proper washing and hygienic handling before the roots move to the drying stage.

Step 3: Controlled Drying

Once the roots have been washed, they are taken for drying.

At Husband Wife Farm, we have a dedicated covered solar drying setup covering approximately 240 square metres and around 20 feet in height.

The covered solar drying area allows us to dry herbs in a protected environment rather than leaving them directly exposed to harsh sunlight.

We also have a separate electric drying system that can be used when faster and controlled drying is required.

The roots are dried sufficiently before they are taken for grinding.

Step 4: Grinding the Dried Roots

Once the Ashwagandha roots are properly dried, they are processed through suitable grinding equipment.

The dried roots are pulverized into a fine powder that is convenient to handle and pack.

Proper drying before grinding is important because roots with excessive moisture are not suitable for efficient powder processing.

Step 5: Packing the Ashwagandha Powder

After grinding, the finished Ashwagandha powder is handled carefully and packed appropriately.

The packaging helps protect the powder from moisture and contamination during storage and transportation.
